COME ON IN
If you hear giggling coming from your bookshelf….. That’s probably one of mine
The Bookcase Misfits are nearly here, and Bradley McBrave’s Big Read is the first to come alive - he’s already dusted himself off and is now wanting an audience.

Bradley McBrave’s Big Read
Chapter 1: Shelf Life Isn’t What They Promised
PAGE PEEK!
My name is Bradley McBrave, and I haven’t been read in 1,247 days.
Yes, I’ve been counting. What else is there to do when you’re wedged on a shelf between a dictionary that nobody uses (because everyone checks their phone these days) and a recipe book with a suspicious stain on the cover that might be ketchup or a crime scene? I try not to think about it.
I’m a book about a brave knight who embarks on an adventure to save a kingdom from a grumpy dragon. At least, I think that’s what I am about. I’ve never actually been opened all the way through, so I’m relying on what I overheard the librarian say when she first shelved me here.
“Oh, another dragon book” she sighed, shoving me between Dictionary Don and recipe Book Rosa. “We have twelve of them already.”
TWELVE! Can you imagine?
Apparently, dragons are terribly popular. You’d think that would work in my favour, but no. I’m stuck in the back corner of the Priverside Primary School library, in a section labelled Slightly Damaged Books: Handle with Care.
I’m not damaged, for the record. I have a tiny tear on page forty-seven where someone (probably a reception child with sticky fingers) got a bit too excited during story time. It’s barely noticeable. But here I am, banished to the Island of Misfit Books, watching all the shiny new arrivals get checked out within hours of hitting he shelves.
A Peek Behind the Scene
I’m Susanne Howitt - children’s author and part time negotiator for characters that don’t follow instructions. I live in West Sussex with my dog, Roxi, who thinks it’s hilarious to run off with my pen. I also live with my husband Robert, who reads every draft I write….. first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth…. You get the picture.
Right now, I’m writing The Bookcase Misfits - a series about books that come alive, tumble off the shelves, and surprise absolutely everyone (including me).
When I’m not writing, I’m knee deep in bookkeeping spreadsheets, doing my best ‘responsible adult’ impression while my mind sneaks off to invent characters who behave better than I do.
My mission is simple: Quick wins for easily bored kids - not long, heavy reads.
